The last 2 days were fairly uneventful. On Sunday, I woke up at about 2:00 AM and i discovered what that hissing noise I first heard on Saturday was. It was gas escaping from my cigarette lighter. I tried to use it but it wouldn't light so I threw it in the bin and went downstairs to see if I could get a box of matches. Success. I smoked went online to see if anyone from home was on and then went back to sleep. The slow leak of Butane gas into the hotel room, may explain my lethargy sometimes.
Later that day I walked around old town a little bit. I needed to withdraw some cash and the ATM outside the hotel was out of service. I landed here with 75 Euro and $10 AUD and exchanged it at the airport for 330 lei. This had lasted me 4 days. I found an ATM on the corner near the hotel. I inspected the ATM for any abnormalities. I was nervous about withdrawing cash, because there are a lot of ATM's that have been tampered with or fitted with card skimming devices.
This ATM was out in the open on the main street and not far from a police station so I figured it should be Ok. After i couldn't see any abnormalities with the machine I inserted my card. The ATM gave me a choice of languages and naturally I selected English, although I did flirt with the idea of guessing Romanian. I took out some money and headed down to the store near the hotel to get some beer and cigarettes.
I then just hung out in the hotel room and drank and watched some movies on the laptop. I went for another walk later that night as I had not really walked around at night yet. I walked around old town and just took in the crowds. There are always lots of people in the streets in Bucharest. Afterwards, I got some more beers from the store and just watched another movie and chatted to a friend in America. I think it was after 2:00 AM by the time I finally went to bed.
Monday morning I woke up at about 8:00 AM, I was hungover and very tired. I decided today I would go down for breakfast. It was included in the cost of the hotel, so I may as well use it. I head down to the restaurant and tell the guy my room number. He welcomes me in by saying "Bon appetit". I pour myself a glass of juice and find an unoccupied table.
The breakfast is a buffet style breakfast. It has everything you would expect to find at a hotel breakfast in Australia, but there were some differences. I can't recall salad, or ham and salami ever being served at breakfast back home, and what they were calling sausages were like salami sticks sliced up. I had a little bit of everything including the salad. It was all delicious. I had the fruit salad with yoghurt and I was surprised to see kiwi fruit so far from home.
After Breakfast I went back upstairs and went back to sleep. I woke up about 10:30 AM and then spent the day just messing about on the laptop. I felt hungover and tired all day.
At about 4:OO PM I went around the corner to a place called 'Dristor Kebap'. I had seen it when I went to meet Miss C on Friday and she had also recommended I try it. It was Kebab shop if you hadn't already guessed. Like an idiot I stood at the counter to be served before somebody said "You have to pay first". Hahahaha. So I go to a little booth and tell the girl inside what I want, pay her 19 lei ($5 or $6 AUD) and she gives me a ticket. I go back to the counter and a guy takes the ticket and says "Beef Pita". I nod my head and he says "English huh" and begins to fill my order. I reply "Yes". He looks at me strangely the whole time he is preparing the kebab and I start to wonder whether he will spit in it or something. He fills the order and then packages it for take away. I leave, I go down to the store near the hotel and buy 2 bottles of Coca Cola and head back to the hotel. The kebab was packaged in a cardboard box and you tear it open in the middle. The kebab was very good, spit or not.
I arrange to meet Miss C the next day and do somethings we discussed around town. I was very tired after eating and struggled to keep my eyes open. I ended up falling asleep around 6:30 PM. I woke up at 2 AM in the morning did some things online and went back to bed. I really wish I could get back into a normal sleeping pattern of sleeping and waking at decent hours. I guess time will tell
